- Archie through Prospero
-
- Archie can be accessed through the Prospero system. This is faster
- than the current interface. Standalone clients using this system can
- obtained via anonymous ftp in the directory ~archie/clients on
- archie.mcgill.ca. See the README file for more details.
-
-
- A beta release of version 4 of the Prospero file system is now
- available by anonymous FTP from cs.washington.edu in the file
- pub/prospero.tar.Z (392 blocks). It can also be obtained through
- Prospero itself from /releases/prospero/prospero.tar.Z.
-
- The Prospero file system supports a user centered view of files
- scattered across the Internet. It can be used to organize references
- to files as if they were on your local system, without the need to
- physically move them. It also provides access to directories and
- indices that can be used to find files of interest that are available
- from Internet archive sites.
-
- The distribution contains the sources necessary to run the Prospero
- server and client. No special privileges are required to install the
- client. Papers describing Prospero can be found in the directory
- pub/pfs/doc.
-
- Announcements of new releases are made to the mailing list
- INFO-PROSPERO@ISI.EDU. If you would like to be added to that list
- send a message to INFO-PROSPERO-REQUEST@ISI.EDU. Requests sent to
- that list are not forwarded to readers, but are instead answered
- individually.
-
- A second mailing list, PROSPERO@ISI.EDU, is for general discussion of
- PROSPERO, and initially for announcements of new sites that have come
- on board, and new directories that people have created to organize the
- information already accessible. The volume on the PROSPERO mailing
- list will be a little higher. Requests for that list should be sent
- to PROSPERO-REQUEST@ISI.EDU.
-
- . Using Prospero to find on-line papers
-
- Prospero is being used to organize information on papers that are
- available by anonymous FTP. To use Prospero, you must install
- Prospero on your system. You need only install the clients though you
- are certainly encouraged to install the server too. Once installed
- you should connect to the 'guest' virtual system using the command:
-
- vfsetup guest
-
- You can find papers by using the 'vcd' and 'vls' commands to move
- around, starting from the '/papers' directory. Once a paper of
- interest has been found, it may be retrieved with the 'vget' command.
- More information on these commands is available in the file
- getting-started.txt, and in the user manual, both included in the
- Prospero distribution.
-
- If you would prefer to have your own virtual system (instead of using
- guest), that can be arranged by sending a message to:
-
- pfs-administrator@cs.washington.edu
-
- With your own virtual system, you will be able to add links to files
- that you have found thus making it easier for you to keep track of
- them.
-
- Users are encouraged, though not required, to create directories
- containing references to their own papers. They are also encouraged
- to pick a topic in which they have expertise and to maintain a
- directory with references to the FTPable papers that they have found
- related on that topic. A user that is maintaining such a directory
- should send a message to pfs-administrator@cs.washington.edu to have
- that directory included at the appropriate place in the
- /papers/subjects or /papers/authors hierarchy.
